North Queensland Irrigated Agriculture Strategy

The NQIAS was a collaborative initiative of the Office of Northern Australia, the Queensland Government and CSIRO that aimed to address knowledge gaps around water resource development, focusing on the Flinders and Gilbert rivers in north Queensland.

The programme included foundational science to establish research methods and modelling to support a comprehensive and integrated evaluation of the feasibility, economic viability and sustainability of surface water development in Australia’s northern rivers.

CSIRO completed an investigation of opportunities for water and agricultural development in the Flinders and Gilbert catchments of north Queensland. Each offers the possibility of irrigation developments approaching (Flinders) or exceeding (Gilbert) the scale of the current Ord River Irrigation Area.
